Family Background

Sawavan is a 15-year-old boy from Traphang Sa Village, Kampong Speu Province, Cambodia. After his parents separated, he was taken in by his uncle, who now provides him with a home and care. Life has been very challenging, but Sawavan remains strong, hopeful, and determined to pursue his dreams. He is in Grade 7 and excels in Khmer and Math, with a goal of becoming a policeman to serve and protect others. His uncle, a subsistence farmer, earns only about 24,000 Riel ($6) per day, which makes it hard to meet basic needs and school costs. At one point, poverty forced him to drop out of school, but support from a compassionate church community helped him return and continue his education. Now a devoted follower of Christ, Sawavan serves faithfully on the church’s welcoming team and is committed to finishing Grade 12 and attending university in the future.
